چکیده

25 Metacontrast is a visual illusion in which the visibility of a target stimulus is 26 virtually lost when immediately followed by a non-overlapping mask stimulus. 27 For a colored target, metacontrast is color-selective, with target visibility 28 markedly reduced when the mask and target are the same color, but only 29 slightly reduced when the colors differ. The present study investigated neural 30 correlates of color-selective metacontrast for cone-opponent red and green 31 stimuli in the human V1, V2 and V3 using functional magnetic resonance 32 imaging. Neural activity was suppressed when the target was rendered less 33 visible by the same-colored mask, and the suppression was localized in the 34 cortical region retinotopically representing the target, correlating with the 35 perceptual topography of visibility/invisibility, rather than the physical 36 topography of the stimulus. Retinotopy-based group analysis found that 37 activity suppression was statistically significant for V2 and V3, and that its 38 localization to the target region was statistically significant for V2. These results 39 suggest that retinotopic color representations in early visual areas, especially in 40 V2, are closely linked to the visibility of color. 41 42

Individual Differences among Grapheme-Color Synesthetes: Brain-Behavior Correlations

Grapheme-color synesthetes experience specific colors associated with specific number or letter characters. To determine the neural locus of this condition, we compared behavioral and fMRI responses in six grapheme-color synesthetes to control subjects. In our behavioral experiments, we found that a subject's synesthetic experience can aid in texture segregation (experiment 1) and reduce the ef...

Neural substrates of visual masking by object substitution in schizophrenia.

Despite a well-known behavioral finding of visual backward masking impairment in schizophrenia, its underlying neural mechanism remains obscure. This study examined neural correlates of a distinct type of visual backward masking, object substitution masking (OSM), in schizophrenia. Twenty schizophrenia patients and 26 healthy controls completed a 4-Dot OSM task and three functional localizer ta...

The effects of spatial and temporal cueing on metacontrast masking

We studied the effects of selective attention on metacontrast masking with 3 different cueing experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 compared central symbolic and peripheral spatial cues. For symbolic cues, we observed small attentional costs, that is, reduced visibility when the target appeared at an unexpected location, and attentional costs as well as benefits for peripheral cues. All these effect...

Multivariate Patterns in the Human Object-Processing Pathway Reveal a Shift from Retinotopic to Shape Curvature Representations in Lateral Occipital Areas, LO-1 and LO-2.

UNLABELLED Representations in early visual areas are organized on the basis of retinotopy, but this organizational principle appears to lose prominence in the extrastriate cortex. Nevertheless, an extrastriate region, such as the shape-selective lateral occipital cortex (LO), must still base its activation on the responses from earlier retinotopic visual areas, implying that a transition from r...
